There’s an ongoing national outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasite that can cause watery, sometimes explosive, diarrhea. Investigation are still ongoing, but the outbreak has been linked to fresh produce, with lettuce and salad greens as the potential source.
Cyclospora is an infection of the small intestine that causes frequent, watery diarrhea and explosive bowel movements. Symptoms usually start 2–14+ days after exposure. Some people will recover on their own without intervention, but it is treatable with antibiotics, plus rest and hydration. Unfortunately, without treatment, symptoms can improve and then suddenly recur. Direct person-to-person spread is unlikely. It is spread by consuming contaminated fruits or vegetables.
Cooking food should kill the parasite. Simply washing produce may not be enough to prevent the spread. Good hygiene still matters though! Wash your hands before you eat and wash your produce anyway!
